Punk rap is a music subgenre of hip-hop influenced by the rebellious ethos, and sometimes, musical characteristics, of punk rock.cite-ref-hotnewhiphop-2-0[2] The genre has been described as also being influenced by styles such as trap music,cite-ref-vulture-3-0[3] heavy metalcite-ref-massappeal-com-4-0[4] and lo-fi music.cite-ref-massappeal-com-4-1[4]

One of the earliest proponents of the scene was Odd Future, due to their merging of hip-hop and shock humor.cite-ref-bbc-5-0[5] In an article for the BBC, journalist Thomas Hobbs referred to the rise of the genre as being a rebellion against the politics of the period, with artists showing disdain for topics such as Brexit, the presidency of Donald Trump and global warming.cite-ref-bbc-5-1[5]

In a way, hardcore punk was a "radical departure"cite-ref-auto4-7-0[7] from alternative and popular music of that era; this was because it was played "louder and harder,"cite-ref-allmusic-com-8-0[8] "wasn't verse-chorus rock," and "dispelled any notion of what songwriting is supposed to be [and] it's its own form"cite-ref-blush-9-0[9] punk rap songs share some of the "unorthodox" characteristics.
